My space is based on the power of 3. This concept lead me in shaping my space. I grouped my windows, cabinets, and walls in 3. I pushed and pulled the space in reaction to the number 3. I really enjoyed this project and shaping this space.

This place to bathe has finally come full circle. I started out researching the Roman baths and attempted using their 3 main rooms as the basis behind my spa, upon more research I was really intrigued by the Native American sweat lodges. Not only did they use the sweat lodges as places to bathe, the Native Americans thought of their time inside the lodge as a time of purification, ridding themselves of all impurities to get back to the 'natural' self. My design took a turn in the direction. I wanted to create a place to bathe that was as raw as the Native American sweat lodges. The original lodges were all very low to the ground basic domed structures; made out of saplings and animal hides. In accordance to ADA requirements height had to be adjusted just enough for a wheelchair to enter the space. Over all the space is 7'-0" tall and 13'-0" wide. I enclosed the circle in the square to help with the requirements for users with disabilities and because I wanted the lodge to connect back to the original form. Instead of having a hole in the ground in the center of the space like the Native Americans, there is a 3'-0" tall shelf that is 8" wide circling around the space where the heated stones would be placed.
The exterior walls are concrete substrate with a stucco finish. The beams on the outside of the structure are oak. The interior walls are concrete substrate with a layer of applied stucco and the top half of the wall has teak wood panelling. The floor is a concrete slab with teak wood on top. and the ceiling piece is reinforced concrete, with double pane glass in the 4" gap between it and the oak posts.

In researching spas, places to bathe, and the different implications of bathing, a few things continued to repeat themselves. Bathing was a socially accepted public occurrence in most cultures. The bathhouse or baths were places for socialization and equality; everyone could take part no matter color, free or slave, and male or female. It was a time for relaxation and enjoying oneself. The cleansing that took part at the baths was looked at by most as an opportunity to clean and renew the body. Water was looked at as a source of healing. Many would soak in the water for 10-11 hours at a time in "special" springs or anointed baths because those water had been deemed worthy of certain healing powers.

Place to Dine: Transitions

The concept behind this dining space was Transitions or Transitioning. I started with the table. It is a 20' wood table, with inlaid wood triangles and as you progress down the table to the buffet the triangles get bigger and push up from the table to create a buffet or place to serve food from. The chair I chose to put with this table is a modernized version of the Rietveld Z chair in a white leather with chrome legs. The room reflects the reactions of the triangles pushing out. The walls tilt in and out creating a dynamic space. Due to the tilting of the walls, the ceiling intersects itself and creates breaks to allow natural light in the room. The ceiling at its highest is 13'. There are hanging lights from the ceiling casting light only on the table. The East elevation depicts the ay window created by the tilted walls. The walls and ceiling are concrete substrate with sheet rock applied and finished with paint. The floor is polished concrete.

Computing in Architecural Design

Computing in design today is helpful not only to clients but to designers as well. Although some programs tend to have their own quirks and learning curves each has its advantages in the field. From talking to top designers and architects, computer aided design has made their jobs easier and more time efficient. Computing in design used to be just using a calculator to help with measurements and conversions, now we can create rooms with textures and do virtual tours of the hypothetical space designed in the computer. It is truly amazing how the technology has changed and enhanced the designers experience in the field.
To me, computing in design is a little intimidating but once you have mastered it, it is a very valuable skill to have. With that said, being able to create awesome virtual spaces with the new programs is now practically a required skill across the field but I feel like designers still need to be able to create spaces and communicate without the computer as well. The increasing technology is a great advantage to the world of design because both clients and designers alike can get a better 3 dimensional idea of the design with opportunities for change and fixing problems before the actual product is begun.
We are quickly heading toward a completely digital world. Ever since the first gigantic computer, technology has bee a huge asset to not only design but the world entirely. As we move closer toward digital entirety, the fundamentals should not be forgotten. Technology is great and an amazing tool, but a good designer should be able to communicate their ideas without computer aid as well as with its help.

The way we, the 4's, decided to fulfill some of the needs is through a shower bus. It has 6 stalls and a storage room that houses the generator, the 2 tankless water heaters and shelving for storing the towels and toiletries the bus will distribute. Lauren Shepulski and I had a great time designing this bus. We learned alot about the science of bathing, like without water saving shower heads one could use 7-10 gallons per minute during a shower but with the water saing devices usage is cut down to 2-4 gallons per minute. That is a huge difference even in a 5 minute shower. We researched how we could transport and/or store water. P.S. Water is heavy! So we fixed that problem by bringing a tanker along with our bus because there would be no way for our bus to haul adequate amounts of water to keep it in working order.

Jenny Paige! Reduce! Reuse! Recycle!

Dear Jenny! I was really excited by your talk last theory hour! I was absolutely impressed with the success of the recycling program at UNCG. It's impressive to know the actual numbers of how much we save, recycle, and help out the community by the efforts you have helped implement. Since I lived in the dorms last year and had the recycling bag on the door, I have really made it a habit of mine to start recycling more! It's exciting to know that our university is making a big impact on our city.

The bus! Route 25, 9:05 PM. Let me tell you! My public transportation experience was two fold! It was somewhat exciting as well! Heading to the bus stop I was a little weary. I hurried out of work in time the catch the GTA in front of Four Seasons Mall. I was the only sole at the bus stop. The us drove by at first ad came back around to pick me up like 15 minutes later. I stepped on the bus and it was packed. It was dark outside and in the bus. The aroma wasn't very pleasant either and it seemed to get stronger as more people get on. I decided to stand instead of sitting plus there was no where for me to sit between the passengers and their shopping bags! Standing at the front of the bus, I was able to take in the full experience of the bus. This old crotchety lady and I were the only white people on the bus! It was a little shocking, I expected more diversity but practically all the passengers were black! When the older white woman yelled at me for standing at the front, I decided to get off. Walking to meet my ride back to my car, I thought about the reading and how blacks worked so hard to get equality with whites and now from the public transportation system it seems like they are still as just as segregated. The feeling on the bus was that of remorse. It seemed like the people didn't even want to be riding the bus at all. The public transportation I believe would be a great way to get around if the bad connotations were removed.

The first week!?

This word sums up my first week. Not only did I go to class 15 hours but I worked 22. Soooo.. I was going eighteen different ways at once, trying to get everything done was like trying to tie a knot in a fart truthfully. It was a miracle I made it through that week and am still functioning today. I am excited though about studio and all the 'fun' stuff we are going to get into. Hopefully the rest of the semester will pan out.

P.s. The graphic came from a rock band on MySpace, I liked the graphic, didn't really listen to their music!

When first given this project, we were at a complete loss. Stumped. Then epiphany. We could make a bowl. Dogs wouldn’t mind drinking from a bowl made of bottle caps. They can chew on it and/or play with it as well as eat or drink from it. So we created a base first by hot gluing the caps together and then attempted sides, too rudimentary (the orange and blue model). We needed to find a way to actually achieve a curved bowl. The second attempt (black and white model) is closer to the desired shape still rudimentary and bonded with hot glue, but this
one is more dynamic. We added straws to it help achieve a more flared shape and add decoration. The final stage of the bowl was and is to make a mold and inject resin into it to create a more sturdy and dynamic structure. Overall the first stages of the bowl took about 25 minutes to create. While the resin bowl took 5 hours minimum.
In the process of creating the bowl, we played around with some of the caps and they nested quite nicely into each other. So we decided to take on another project as well as the bowl. We went about creating children’s play toys with the nestling caps, mainly cars/trucks. The first attempt is a truck. Not as streamline but a cool concept and sweet little toy, if you ask me. Next which s my favorite is the rattle jeep. Truthfully I think the car/truck idea is the most marketable and economically savvy. They took about an hour and a half to create from start to finish. A couple screws, glue, a bottle, dowels, and some caps and you have an exciting little toy car.
Both products can be used and reused. We still feel a toy car would get more use than a bowl, more sentimental value can be placed in a hand my down old toy car. Everything in the car can be salvaged and used to keep items from adding to the landfill.

Only One 18in. 2x4?

This assignment was intimidating at first: make a self-sustaining system out of one 18in. 2x4.
I was at a loss... but I went for simplicity. Since we were expected to use every piece of the wood and had a minimum requirement of 6 cuts, I went with the mortise and tenon approach. I did a tusk/through tenon. The wedges are the pieces I cut off to make the tenon. I decided to make them stick out more because I liked the look and it was a very tight squeeze to wedge them in. I experimented with the angles of the tenoned piece and this is the only angle where the mortise would hold snuggle without cracking or stretching. Although I said this was simple it really wasn't. It took alot of work and I had to learn alot about the woodshop, since this was my first encounter.

These I was very impressed with. I enjoyed drawing and shading them. Still life, though? I think not. It is very hard to be the object of a still life. I learned this from experience. You have to get in a comfortable position that you can hold for a long time. I had trouble with that!

Time Capsule Zine

This zine is for our time capsule project. My proposal is a gradually polished rock that will be installed outside of our Gatewood building in the center of the traffic circle across the street. It's final dimensions will be 6'x6'x6'. It is to represent us as students who start at very rough and gradually develop in our five years of the program and finally are polished in the real world that we all plan to enter. This program is also a very solid one, hence the rock!

Wow... this one started out rough. This is my container for a memory! I was in a motorcycle wreck, was thrown 20 yards, and didn't receive a scratch. Kind of a supernatural experience - God-encounter type thing, but this resulted as my design and iterations for this project. It was difficult to actually grasp the concept but once I found it, it worked.

This is the scene that I captured after returning to the parking deck on Edgar Street. Instead of focusing on the lamp post and it's detail, it just proved as a frame for the background. I believe I like this one better just because it looks more simple and takes in the whole scene instead of one single focus. I really enjoy the simplicity of objects and scenes.

I just have to say I absolutely love Andrea Joseph!! Love her, love the blog, love her drawings! They are all so fun! From flower pots to purses and shoes... It's all different but stylistically similar. I love the color combos and the curvaceous detail. I like the way she draws everyday things such as pumps, and hats hanging on chairs. It reminds me of home and the boutique I worked in that closed down. It was all laid back, never too rigid, everything was flexible and dynamic and it was always busseling with life and energy. Andrea Joseph is a definate favorite!
